Meghnad Desai
by London School of Economics
It is with deep sadness that LSE marks the passing of Lord Meghnad Desai, who died on 29 July 2025 in Delhi at the age of 85.
Lord Desai was a distinguished thinker, writer, and economist, and a cherished member of the LSE community for over five decades.
At LSE, Lord Desai taught a wide range of subjects including econometrics, macroeconomics, Marxian economics, and development economics. In the 1970s, he became known for his idiosyncratic approach to teaching economic principles to first-year students, beginning with the work of Piero Sraffa.
From 1990 to 1995, he served as Head of the Development Studies Institute. In 1992, he established the Centre for the Study of Global Governance, which he led until his retirement in 2003. He was later named an Honorary Fellow and Emeritus Professor in recognition of his extraordinary service to LSE and scholarship.
