Giuseppe De Nittis

di George Shackelford

Giuseppe de Nittis, born in Puglia, migrated to Paris and enjoyed not only a great professional success—he showed with the Maison Goupil, among the fanciest—but also befriended many artists, writers, and socialites. Manet, Degas, Tissot, Caillebotte; Zola and the Goncourts; La Princesses Mathilde. His first paintings are from the 1860s, and he dies prematurely in 1884. He is celebrated in a VERY FINE exhibition now on view at the Phillips Collection. I‘d say for anybody interested in the nineteenth century, it’s a show not to miss.
